**Saint Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582)** was one of the most influential figures in Christian spirituality and a towering voice of Spanish literature. Born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada in Ávila, Spain, she entered the Carmelite convent as a young woman and devoted her life to prayer, contemplation, and the pursuit of intimate union with God.
A woman of extraordinary courage, intelligence, and spiritual depth, she led a remarkable reform of the Carmelite Order, founding convents dedicated to a life of simplicity, discipline, and contemplative prayer. Despite illness, opposition, and numerous hardships, she persevered in her mission with unwavering faith and determination.
Her literary masterpieces, including *The Life of Saint Teresa of Jesus*, *The Interior Castle*, and *The Way of Perfection*, remain timeless guides to the spiritual life. In 1970, Pope Paul VI proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church, making her the first woman to receive this distinction. Today, Saint Teresa of Ávila is revered worldwide as a mystic, reformer, and spiritual master whose teachings continue to illuminate the path toward divine love.
