Zusammenfassung

The central theme of this study is the experiences, perceptions and actions that occur when two human beings are engaged in a meaningful encounter. Alothough dyadic reltionships represent perhaps the most universal and frequent type of interaction between people, at the time that this book was originally published in 1966, they had received comparatively little attention from psychologists. The Interpersonal Perception Method (IPM) which the authors devised is designed to measure and provide understanding of the conjunctions, and disjuntions of 2 individuals in respect of a range of key issues with which they may be concerned. Most of the material presented centres around the husband and wife relations, but the application of the method extends to all other 2 person situations, as well as to many aspects of 'we-they' relations. The first part of the book is concerned with theoretical explorations; the second with the application of the IPM illustrated by a number of examples.

Ronald David Laing (1927-1989) trained and qualified as a doctor, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. R.D. Laing published 15 books which sold worldwide in their millions, the most celebrated of which are: The Divided Self: An Existential Study in Sanity and Madness; Sanity, Madness and the Family, The Politics of Experience and the Bird of Paradise and Knots. The Divided Self is required reading on many psychology courses and to this day the life and works of R. D. Laing influence writers, poets, musicians, philosophers, psychologists, therapists, film makers and those involved with the day-to-day challenges of coping and dealing with mental distress. R.D. Laing was a controversial figure to the Establishment and a hero to the counter-culture movement of the 1960s which viewed R. D. Laing as a pioneering humanitarian whose works displayed an authentic existential understanding of psychosis.

(By kind permission of the Laing Estate).

Herbert Phillipson (1911-1992) was a pioneer of clinical psychology and was, among other things, the creator of the Object Relations Test (O.R.T.) He was appointed as Senior Psychologist at the Tavistock Clinic in 1945 where he remained as Chief Psychologist until his retirement in 1974.
