Paris to New York overland - across Siberia, along the Kolyma, over the frozen Bering Strait to Alaska. De Windt made the attempt in 1901-02 and very nearly died of it; the account is dry and the country is not. This edition adds a gallery of 59 plates after Turner, Vereshchagin, Friedrich and Bierstadt, and eight illustrations restored and coloured for the first time.
