Fairy tales of Wales gathered by an American minister who had taught in Japan and knew how quickly such things vanish: the golden harp, the boy who was named Trouble, the lady of the lake, the red bandits of Montgomery. Griffis published them in 1921, when Welsh was still the first language of the valleys he walked. The tales are shorter than the Irish ones and much drier, and the humour is closer to the surface. Sixty plates of Welsh landscape by painters including Richard Wilson and David Cox Jr. carry the sea, waterfalls and hayfields of the tales from 1782 to 1916.
