Basque Sports: Histories, Identities, Politics and Landscapes is the first book to offer a systematic review of Basque sport and its historical, political, anthropological, and sociological significance. The Basques have nurtured traditional sports like the ball game pelota, or baserri (farmstead)-inspired herriko kirolak (rural sports) for centuries. Basque soccer clubs were founding members of the Spanish La Liga, and generations of Basque footballers and coaches have contributed to the growth of international football. Today, Basque athletes excel in a wide variety of sports, youth and leisure sport participation is thriving, and the Basque Country hosts major competitions and events. Sport has emerged as a form of soft diplomacy through which the Basques, a nation without a state, insert themselves as agents in global histories. This volume features fourteen chapters on how sport both reflects and constructs Basque histories, identities, politics, and landscapes. Mariann Vaczi is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Reno.
