Zusammenfassung

Inspired by the life of Rachel Carson, this sweeping historical novel follows a young Maine islander whose dreams of becoming a scientist are upended by love, sacrifice, and a secret that resurfaces decades later.

Seventeen-year-old Galene Macgregor dreams of becoming a marine scientist, though life on a small Maine island offers little room for ambition. In the summer of 1963, she divides her days between caring for her father, who is losing his sight, and helping her struggling lobsterman brother, Sam. Her future feels distant-until she is hired as a maid for renowned author and conservationist Rachel Carson, a seasonal resident.

Galene has long admired Carson's writing about the sea, and the job quickly becomes something more. As she assists Carson during the tense months leading up to the publication of Silent Spring, Galene is drawn into a world of intellectual rigor, public scrutiny, and quiet courage. In Carson's presence, she begins to imagine a life beyond the limits of her island.

But that awakening is disrupted by a summer romance with James, the son of a wealthy family with its own hidden fractures. When Galene becomes pregnant and James disappears under the weight of his family's unraveling secrets, her carefully forming future collapses. Pressured by circumstance, she marries her high school sweetheart, concealing the truth of her daughter's paternity. After tragedy strikes, she leaves the island behind, determined to start over.

Twenty-five years later, Galene is a respected scientist, but the past still shadows her. When she returns home to face a looming foreclosure, she encounters James again-now a powerful developer with plans that threaten her family's land. To protect what remains, Galene must decide whether revealing the truth about her daughter will finally set her free.

Inspired by the life and legacy of Rachel Carson, Shorelines is a sweeping novel of ambition, motherhood, and the enduring pull of place.

Sheila Myers is a historical fiction author whose novels explore family sagas set in both contemporary and early-20th-century America. Her work has earned critical acclaim, including a starred Kirkus review and recognition from the Adirondack Center for Writing, and is known for its richly drawn characters and deep sense of place.

A professor at a small college in upstate New York, Myers teaches ecology and brings her interest in landscape and natural systems into her fiction. Her debut trilogy follows the family of railroad magnate Dr. Thomas C. Durant, inspired by time spent at one of the Great Camps built by his son in the Adirondack wilderness. The series includes Imaginary Brightness (2015), Castles in the Air (2016), and The Night is Done (2017), with the final installment receiving the 2017 Best Book of Fiction Literary Award from the Adirondack Center for Writing.

Her subsequent novel, The Truth of Who You Are (2022), is set during the Great Depression in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Her most recent novel, The Painting (2026), is a contemporary family drama inspired by a legal dispute surrounding the sale of a Hudson River School painting from the William Seward House Museum.

Myers's essays on her research have appeared in Adirondack Life, Appalachian Club Magazine, and History News Network, and she has been featured on the History Author Show, Based on a True Story, and the History Channel.

When not writing or teaching, she can often be found hiking, swimming in lakes, or exploring wild landscapes in search of inspiration.
