James Madison (1751-1836) was an American statesman, political philosopher, and Founding Father often called the "Father of the Constitution" for his central role in drafting the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He served as the fourth President of the United States and was one of the principal architects of the American system of government, particularly the ideas of checks and balances and the separation of powers.
