At the beginning of each year, the narrator returns to the town of Salouit in the far north of Canada, where the bitter cold leaves its harsh mark on both the land and its people. Through her story, we witness the transformation that has swept through the Inuit people.
In her tale, sorrow and beauty intertwine, revealing how profoundly this people has changed, yet they strive to survive in a harsh world that offers them no chance to preserve their identity.
The anonymous protagonist tells us of women struggling against men, of men who yearn to become "Western" but are rejected by urban society, and of children lost amidst it all. She prompts us to ask: are they truly different from us? They suffer from almost everything that plagues modern societies. The difference lies in their struggle to reconnect with the new civilization and return to their past, their history, and their origins.
But amidst all this darkness, we see a glimmer of light, offering a glimmer of hope to this people who, in countless ways, strive to remain true to themselves.
