Laris easily moved around the taller woman. "You might want to step back."
"Why?"
Laris didn't answer her. Instead she started chanting words that Vespera heard but couldn't comprehend. Much to Vespera's alarm, the runes scratched into the top of the edge rocks started to glow.
"I should leave," Vespera muttered to herself. She wanted to dash up the stairs and rush out of the manor, but she knew she would quickly find herself lost in the confusing path they had traveled through the house.
When the creature all but exploded out of the well, Vespera shrieked in surprise.
Even though she knew she had gotten herself involved with?through no action of her own?a woman who was a powerful sorceress, Vespera was still horrified at the monster that appeared from the well.
It was all but impossible to describe. In the weak light all Vespera could see were long, squirming tentacles that seemingly connected to a massive body that was mostly hidden by the infinite amount of prehensile limbs flailing about. The creature's skin was moist and dripping. The color varied from pure white to bright pink. Some of the tentacles ended in tapered points, some ended in sharp spikes, some ended in club-like knobs, and more than a few ended in obscene mouths from which issued forth unnatural gray tongues.
If Vespera knew that one of the ancient gods lived beneath the streets of Yort she never would have remained in the city for more than a minute.
As much as she wanted to run, she found that she couldn't, not because she was magically held in place, but because she was fascinated at what she saw.
