Monrovia, Liberia. November 1999.
The war is over, but the city still bleeds.
When a school bus carrying orphan girls is obliterated in a terrorist bombing on Randall Street, the shockwave ripples through a city barely holding itself together in the shadow of a gathering monsoon. Among those shaken to the core is Frank Preston - a former Canadian special forces soldier now working for an NGO, trying to purify Liberia's contaminated water and, perhaps, his own troubled conscience.
But Monrovia has plans for Frank Preston.
Drawn into a deadly web by CIA field officer Greyson Dent, Frank learns that the bombing is no random act of terror. It is the opening move in a calculated campaign of revenge orchestrated by Sheikh Saif Daoud Al-'Owhali - one of the world's most wanted and elusive terrorists - whose son was killed in Afghanistan by a man Al-'Owhali can't find. Unable to reach his true target, the Sheikh has sent his ruthless enforcer, Abdul Hazrat Rohilla, to Monrovia to deliver a message written in innocent blood.
With Rohilla operating from the shadows and a corrupt network of local crime protecting the bomb-maker responsible for the carnage, Frank and Sam Boakai - a hospital security chief with his own score to settle - are set loose on the city's most dangerous men. Racing against the monsoon that threatens to lock down Monrovia's streets, roads, and airport, Frank pursues the fat Arab through chaotic checkpoints, ambushed back roads, and flooded alleyways. When he finally comes face to face with Rohilla, it is Frank who is left broken, battered, and bleeding in a filthy alley - dismissed as irrelevant, kept alive only to feel the humiliation of defeat.
But Frank Preston doesn't stop. Doesn't forgive. Doesn't forget.
And the hunt has only just begun.
The Awakened is a gripping geopolitical thriller set against the vivid, violent backdrop of post-war West Africa - a story of vengeance, moral complexity, and one man's journey from reluctant bystander to relentless hunter.
