Timnit Gebru is a prominent computer scientist and AI researcher known for her work on algorithmic bias and AI ethics. Born in Ethiopia, she came to the US as a teenager and gained a PhD at Stanford, worked at Apple and Microsoft and in 2018 was named co-lead on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence Team at Google. She controversially left the company following the publication of an influential paper on bias in large language models. In 2021 She co-founded the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR). She is also the founder of Black in AI.
She has won Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer Award in 2020, was named one of the world's 50 greatest leaders by Fortune in 2021 as well as Nature's Ten people who helped shape science; one of TIME 100's most influential people in AI in 2023. She was added to BBC's 100 Women list in 2023. |
