Sometimes what you need isn't a hug-it's a reality check.

I'm going to say something that might make you uncomfortable: Your feelings don't matter as much as you think they do.

Breathe. I know that stings. In a world where we're constantly told that our feelings are valid, that self-care is paramount, that we should honor our emotions and give ourselves grace-hearing that your feelings might not be the most important thing in the room feels almost violent.

But here's the thing: We've swung too far.

We've taken "feelings are valid" and turned it into "feelings are everything." We've taken "be kind to yourself" and turned it into "never ask anything difficult of yourself." We've taken "it's okay to not be okay" and turned it into "it's okay to stay not-okay forever while making everyone accommodate your not-okay-ness."

We've created a generation of people who can't function when they feel uncomfortable. Who cancel plans because they're "not in the right headspace." Who abandon commitments because they need to "honor their energy." Who avoid hard conversations because they might feel "triggered." Who've confused "I don't feel like it" with "I can't do it."

The coddling has gone too far. And someone needs to say it.

I spent years in the cult of self-care, treating every negative emotion as something to be soothed, every discomfort as something to be avoided, every hard thing as something that could wait until I felt "ready."

You know what happened? Nothing. I was so busy managing my feelings that I never got around to building a life that would actually make me okay.

Then a friend looked at me and said: "At some point, you're going to have to stop letting your feelings run your life."

I was offended. I was hurt. And then I realized they were right.

My feelings were real. But they were also terrible advisors.
