Suddenly, I saw five or six people taking hands-full of dry grass. As they caught on fire, they threw them to the side to start more fires that would make a broader front. If the fire got to the trees there would be an inferno that no one could stop or outrun. By making the fire line wider, it would spread faster and possibly be too broad a front to escape to the side. The narrow ravines that came together here got wider and deeper as the went up the mountain and a fast moving fire up the three ravines at once would cut off all escape. They were trying to burn us out and likely kill most of us in the process. I brought up the SKS and triggered five rounds without aiming.
