Martin Herzog was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Towson State College as a mathematics major with the intention of teaching in a secondary school in Baltimore. After graduation, Martin bypassed a teaching career and joined the Navy in 1967 and after 2 years of intense training became a Naval Carrier Aviator.
During his naval career of twenty years of active duty, Commander Herzog flew eight Navy aircraft, and had carrier landings on six different aircraft carriers and had over 250 combat missions in Vietnam. Eight years of his active duty were spent at the United States Naval Academy.
As a civilian, Martin realized his teaching aspirations by teaching in Junior High School, Senior High School, Community College and the Naval Academy.
Martin married the former Mary Elizabeth Friend in 1976 and together they adopted 5 children: Kevin, Elizabeth, MaLisa, Maryel and Jennifer. They also have one grandson, Justin.
After retiring from military and from civilian service, Martin is presently teaching part time at the U.S. Naval Academy
