"What was the inspiration behind the creation of this book?"
Beth Hoffman has stated in many of her interviews that she had fallen in love with the South from a very young age. It was thus rather inevitable for her to set her loving book in the South. What more, her love for it began when she first took a trip to her Aunt Mildred's. She travelled by train and was picked up by her Auntie in her big black Buick. To young Beth's eyes, Auntie's particularly lavish appearance, her well-combed hair, the gloves and the hat made a massive impression. When Beth was taken to her Auntie's home, she was impressed by the big gardens, the Greek architecture and the big library with the numerous books. Young Beth Hoffman, having grown up in a rural area, on a farm, was fascinated with the life of the South, the parties and her aunt's educated and posh personality. This was a completely different world for young Beth.
